Employers' concerns in the employment of people with disabilities

Research output: Contribution to journal › Article › peer-review

Abstract

In spite of legislation that prohibits discrimination against qualified people with disabilities and educators' efforts to support them in learning work skills, numerous barriers still exist to attaining employment. The purpose of this paper is to examine the trends in the employment of people with disabilities and to investigate employers' concerns regarding the employment of people with disabilities. The study found that employees with disabilities' negative attitudes toward work, difficulties in job skills, burden of providing accommodations, and employers' inexperience hiring people with disabilities were major four barriers to hiring people with disabilities. Implications were discussed and this information has limited value for developing intervention goals and vocational programs.
