Abstract

In 2001, Gavriel Iddan and Paul Swain first commercialized wireless capsule endoscope. Thereafter, small bowel, esophagus, and large bowel video capsules were developed in sequence. Since 2002, small intestine capsule endoscopy has been introduced in Korea. In 2003, the Korean Gut Image Study Group was organized to establish a national database, conduct multicenter clinical studies, and develop the technology of capsule endoscopy. Capsule endoscopy made in Korea was approved by the government in 2007. Capsule endoscopy is noninvasive and has a higher diagnostic yield than other diagnostic modalities in patients with small bowel diseases. From September 2014, insurance benefits were provided for obscure gastrointestinal bleeding in Korea.
