Abstract

Purpose. A new viscoelastic fermented from streptococci containing 1% hyaluronic acid was developed by Lucky Chemical Inc. The objective was to evaluate this viscoelastic and Healon (Pharmacia) to know the efficacy and safety of new viscoelastic material. Method. In a masked study, rabbits were monitored corneal thickness, IOP and examined and scored for ocular reactions according to the modified McDonald-Shadduck score system at 0, 1, 3, 6, 24, 48 and 72 hours post injection. In a vitreal study, parameters studied were the quantitation of inflammatory cells and ocular irritation and inflammation graded by the modified McDonald shadduck and Erwin Hultsch score systems. Viscoelastics were further evaluated for bovine corneal endothelial cell (BCE) cytotoxicity in a quantitative [3H]-thymidine incorporation bioassay, viscoelastics were diluted 1:10, 1:100, 1:1000 and 1:10000 with CSM, incubated with BCE cells and radiolabeled for 72 hours. Result. No statistically significant differences in IOP, corneal thickness, were found between the control and the test group at any of the periods monitored. Mean ocular irritation and inflammation scores throughout the 72 hour observation period were negative for all test and control groups. All test eyes and negative control eyes in vitreal chamber injection study were graded as non-inflammatory. All test and control dilutions exhibited a statistically similar rate of [3H]-thymidine incorporation. In conclusion, Home-made viscoelastic has been shown to be a safe and efficacious viscoelastic material for use in anterior chamber surgery.
